Are you planning to retire?

If the answer is yes, are you preparing financially? If so, that means you will have enough money to do all the fun things you looked forward to doing, instead of having to think twice about the smallest purchase.  And, hopefully, you will plan so well that you will have more than enough money to pay for medical services not covered by insurance or Medicare. Unfortunately, many folks retire thinking, “I won’t need as much money anymore.” Wrong!

We’ve all seen headlines about women killed by an intimate partner or the elderly neglected by their children and are horrified by the devastating and insidious problem of domestic abuse.  However, we are also relieved that it seems to happen to other people, never anyone we know.  Unfortunately, this is not the case.  Millions of boomers are suffering in silence, too afraid to speak up or too ashamed to break away from their current situation.

A few years back, while visiting my wife's family during the holidays in Kansas City, MO, I made a pilgrimage to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, situated in an older part of the city, down the street from Ruby's Soul Food restaurant.  It's a wonderful place, connected to an equally splendid jazz museum.  I'm a huge baseball fan and had been looking forward to the visit, but I got an unexpected treat: as I was walking across the central foyer to the museum entrance, I saw an impeccably dressed, dignified elderly man walking gingerly in the other direction, stopping every few feet to greet well-wishers with a smile that lit up the room like a beacon.  I recognized him immediately.  I turned to my father and whispered, "That's Buck O'Neil."

Many years ago, a case known as Torcaso v. Watkins established that a belief in God was not necessary for a belief system to qualify as a religion.

I never forgot about the case and over time, it became clear that in addition to established mainstream religions there were a whole bunch of belief systems, complete with non theistic  “articles of faith” that could easily qualify as religions as established by Torcaso v. Watkins.  

For example, one of our most entrenched non-theistic belief systems relates to accepted practices and thinking for those “of a certain age.” It’s what I call the religion of Fogeyism  Don’t laugh. It is so insidious that many, if not most people at midlife or beyond are practitioners to some degree without realizing it.
